I think that remakes do a social good. Whether they are good or bad, they reinforce the worth of the original.
If they are good, they make the original prized for being the fount of that goodness.
If they are bad, we go back to the original for relief.
And lots of people will go back to the original just to have a looksee.
It's win-win.
And really, people, who gets upset when someone makes a bad knock-off of the Mona Lisa. We either dismiss it or think back to the one guy who did it right. Why should the movies be any different?

I agree with not remaking all of the previously mentioned movies. Then again I don't think most movies should be remade. Let Hollywood start being more original again. Sadly, I think in time, EVERY movie classic will be remade. (then probably remade again and again as decades pass) Even Star Wars someday once George Lucas dies and his family sells the rights. *shudders* John Carpenter's The Thing of course is a classic (one of my favs) and is a remake but the original WAS made in the mid 1950s. ( I am ignoring the dreadfull recent prequel/remake of Carpenter's version)

I wouldn't like to see any Alien or predator film remade and any terminator film.

Agree with just about all of the films mentioned so far.
Am going to re-iterate the Alien movies and add the Harry Potter movies.

I heavily agree about Gremlins and Ghostbusters to never be remade. Those are two that I think shouldn't be messed with; I'd also say Robocop but they already did that one.
Recently, I've thought about this topic, and I was thinking of movies that could stand to be remade, but as I thought further on it actually sounds like a bad idea. Like Howard the Duck, originally I thought I wouldn't mind if a remake were done. But I just don't see it being remade well, it's so much an '80's movie, today I'm not sure people would really understand it. They'd try to dumb it down, or market it for younger audience, which would take away some of the charm the original had.

It's interesting to note that the Scarface is actually a remake itself, of a 1932 film As well as John Carpenter's The Thing.
