Well, after hearing so many good and bad things about this film I decided to give it a go and picked up The Human Centipede: First Sequence on blu-ray. I also picked up the sequel. Last weekend my brother and I watched the first one on Saturday night and here are a few of my impressions.
To start things off, this is a story we've seen a hundred times. Boys/ Girls are traveling by car, car breaks down, boys/girls stumble across a house out in the middle of nowhere, bad people live there, boys/girls survive or succumb to the evil powers that be, Roll Credits.
So what sets this one apart from all the others? Well this one gives us a villain with surgical skills and an agenda! The agenda: to make a human centipede by attaching his victims in a very interesting way. Purpose?? To prove it can be done. At least that's the only reason I was able to come up with after watching it.
It was obvious that Tom Six was going with Shock value to drive this picture to succeed monetarily. My only complaint is that he didn't do enough with his creation. Once the centipede was made, it sort of just sat around and ate out of a dog bowl. If your going to rely on the centipede as your main focal point of your film (minimal plot), than you darn well better do some interesting things with it!
I thought the acting was on par with what they were trying to do. The doctor played by Dieter Laser was creepy enough and I really liked the expressions on his face throughout the film. Our two female victims, from the beginning, were your standard fodder to be killed off and acted accordingly. The Japanese guy (the front of the centipede) was the only character that really annoyed me. He just wouldn't shut the hell up!! Especially when the good doctor was trying to explain the medical procedure he was about to embark on.
Overall, my brother and I didn't love the film or hate it. I liked the visuals, ya know the scenery and such. I liked the doctor character and his mannerisms. I obviously liked his creation but would have liked to have seen it in some different scenarios. This film also would have benefited from the addition of another evil character. Dr. Heiter was missing his Egor . The additional dialogue between these two would've added strength to this film. I had no problem with the ending, and if I had made the film I probably would have ended it the same way......In conclusion, Great idea for a film, yet not fully realized. Grade C+
I'll give my thoughts of the sequel after I get a chance to view it.
