this is a question i ask my self alot these days .... okay the freakin image is better (and not on all movies) but in order to really get full advantage out of blu ray u need a 1080p hdtv. i honestly dont see myself enjoying a movie THAT MUCH MORE just because i see the grain of salt in a salt shaker... a DVD upconverter does it for me. you might say "well a blu ray player also upconverting" true ... but im not gonna spend 450 bucks on a blue ray player and a movie (if i have any cash left over) so i can go home and upconvert all my regular dvd's. Thats why at the moment im happy with my $60 Phillips upconverter plays any region, video format (mp4, WMA, DivX, quicktime, real player... etc) AND has a usb hub for my external needs. i dont know why people feel the need to go blu ray. alot of the movies dont even have the special features that the dvd version has. When i saw the Terminator 2 Blu Ray disc i was like ... wow that must come with TONS of new and old stuff on a single disc ... then i find out its a bare bones ?? and the image isnt even that good (for the sake of argument) i wondered why in the hell did they waste all those perfectly good blu ray discs on a bare bones release .... i mean blu ray is suppose to have SOOOO MUCH more potential and hold SOOO MUCH MORE DATA. And if your into blu ray ... hey its kool but while your at the register paying 70 bucks plus taxes for 2 movies ill take those 70 bucks and buy 4 or 5 (maybe 6) special edition versions on DVD or ill buy the same movies you got on dvd and save my money lol i dont see blu ray making anywhere near as much profit as dvd this year, next year, and the year after. it'll take a long while before Blu ray dominates the home video market ... im talking 10 15 years..... and when blu ray drops the price on they're movies ... dvd will have become so much more easier and cheaper to produce that blu ray will still be far behind. 35 bucks for a movie is just WAAAAY too expensive ... .sure you'll find deals here and there but not enough to make blu ray the number 1 choice for home video.... i honestly believe that HD-DVD and Blu Ray were released WAAAAAAAY too pre maturely. Blu Ray "winning" the format war means.... well.... nothing really ....they just have to fight THAT much more to stay in the game for the long haul....

I suppose i'm supposed to answer this since I am the most active in discussion on the matter of blu-ray correct?

lol its up to you lol
i think they should have pushed upconverters more and waited to release hd-dvd and blu ray.... the better idea was to have all the studios agree on a format to follow dvd as the next video format instead of having the so called "war".

Well first off Picture Quality is Something great to have, and increases the enjoyability.
I currently run blu-ray In 1080 i, which isnt 1080p. It still looks stunning. Also the sound quality is much better also. Once I get the 37in 1080p tv and surround sound for my room then things will be awesome.
Blu-ray can holb 50GB of storage or more, that will help save production costs to make seasons of shows that would normally take up 5 discs take up 1 or 2 at the most. The reasons seasons are currently 5 or more discs on blu-ray is because they havn't been trying to store the data in smaller amounts. Also with the 2-disc sets that's just a marketing ploy to make you think you will get more.
While you say that prices are outrageous they are dropping down and you have to be a smart shopper to find the best prices.
I've had my PS3/ Blu-Ray player since December 26th 07 and I have 25 blu-rays currently. It's my preference in purchasing blu-ray because I believe that I get a better experience. The swap to Blu-Ray is almost inevitable now and wouldn't be considered a risk buy anymore.
People could spend hours upon hours telling me which is better but I almost always go with my preference.
So in my opinion if you upgraded to blu-ray and alot of people did prices would drop and more titles would be released. For anything to be successful it must have supporters.

Each to their own. Personally I see no difference really in HD, Bluray and just a regular DVD!! Not enough to warrant a 'wa'r or to warrant buying something for a much more expensive price simply cos it's labelled 'hd' or'bluray' ect.

@ coolg35748
i disagree with u i dont see "The swap to Blu-Ray is almost inevitable " by any means for the mear fact that its too expensive ... yeah the blu ray dvd prices are droping here and there and you gotta really dig to find the better deals ... i personally dont like to search for days looking for a blu ray movie to see where its cheaper. Plus DVD is outselling blu ray by alot. i agree that PS3 is the best choice for a blu ray player but if yoru only gonna use it to watch movies ... its not worth it . 400 bucks just to watch movies ... and expensive movies really isnt worth it..
@ saiyansgirl
there is a difference in HD and regular dvd. But in order to see it you need about a 4,000 dollar setup ... atleast thats how much circuit city is charging for the complete setup. and i will admit it looks freakin awesome you know like when you see "making of" documentaries well movies look like that and i was blown away but for 4 grand no thanks ...... its all a cost issue

First off I have both HD and Bluray, and even though it is dead I still prefer HD, I think technically it is a better format, and the prices were great. I don't buy HD anymore though as it's dead. But I still don't have nearly as many Blurays as I do HD-DVDs. It does look better in 1080p, but it really depends on how picky you are. I think a lot of people claim to see more of a difference than they really can just to sound cool or something. But the surround sound adds a whole new element, and both HD formats far exceed DVD in the audio they can deliver I think we are going to have to wait and see on the space issue. For the most part Blurays use pretty bad compression, which doesn't really allow them to take advantage of the disc space. You could fit as much if not more info at higher quality on an HD disc as you could on a Bluray even though Bluray is so much bigger. If they start using better compression, then we might see multi disc sets condensed into 2 discs. Which I agree would be pretty sweet, especially if they pass the price to the consumers. I haven't seen prices drop much at all for Blurays. This was another area where HD kicked Blu's ass, but that doesn't matter much anymore. I would never buy a Bluray new in a store, you can always find it way cheaper online somewhere, but price is still a huge issue. I don't think it is inevitable. Sure it beat HD, but I think it will probably go the way of the Laserdisc, which I still own and use. The players are too expensive, the discs are too expensive, and the selection of titles is pretty weak. Sort of Catch 22 there. You need prices to drop and titles to come out for more people to make the switch, but people won't make the switch till that happens. I am all in favor of upgrading. I was sitting in Best Buy watching Planet Earth in HD sometime at the begining of last summer, and that convinced me that it was time for me to upgrade. The difference is pretty dramatic, and worth the money I think. But I also have an HD camera and wanted to watch the video I shoot in full HD.

no man. I wasn't trying to. I recomend Bluray as it's the only Hi Def format and agree with a lot of what you said. I probably just sound angry cause I am bitter that HD lost.

TO ALL
you know i dont doubt that Blu ray is better.... nor am i saying blu ray is shit . i know blu ray is the best picture and the next to take the thrown but its just waaaay too soon to say "Blu Ray is here and dvd is going out the door"
"I don't buy HD anymore though as it's dead"
if i were u i wouldnt stop cold turkey .... i bought the external HD DVD player for my xbox 360 two weeks ago for 50 bucks. BUT i ended up returning it cuz it either did a poor job of upconverting my regular dvd's or it didnt upconvert at all. I bought a 3 movie pack to go along with it for 35 bucks so it was about $11 per HD dvd.
I was planning to buy my HD DVD movies on deepdisount.com because they had alot of good movies al WAAAY low prices. so if i were you id check out deepdiscount.com's selection of hd movies ranging from 9-25 bucks.
this is another thing that i have been asking my self ... okay HD DVD is dead but that doesnt mean that is doesnt work ... alot of movies are now at clearence prices ... if anything id be happy that all the 35 dollar movies are now 10-15-20 dollars ....

nuke-
I will still buy HD-DVDs when the price is right for sure. I bought 2 last week for $6, and will probably end up buying a bunch more. I still buy laserdiscs and Beta tapes too, so a dead format doesn't scare me away.

See this is why I think my eyes are messing up on me. We have a big ass tv set up for this and yet still I don't really notice anything. It's not enough. I know other people that think the same, but maybe we'll part of a minority.

I'm holding out on the whole Blu-ray thing. Its a stepping stone technology. In the end niether Blu-ray or HD will win the "war", another technology that integrates High Def with technology that people already have will come along and make blu-ray as redundant as laser disk. Additionally, Blu-ray has a serious problem... it isn't friendly to mid market manufacturers. It is cost effective only for the major studios and distributors. This is why the porn industry didn't embrace blu-ray. Believe it or not, the porn industry always ultimately decides these media battles because they are such a huge market... only the consumer has more impact on market and media changes.

if you a BIG collector you'll want one. I for one think it looks nice and great for a Hi-Def TV. But for a lot of movies that their making Blu-Ray for don't need it. Like; Like Mike, Clerks, etc. They don't need it. Though movies like Spider Man, Beavis and Butthead, (any animated movie), The Dark Knight, Taking of Pelham 1 2 4, they should have one.
