if you a BIG collector you'll want one. In a year or so there will be a new media medium and your Blu-ray player will be a very expensive paperweight. I'm holding out for a more user friendly, interfacing media that will integrate more with media I have. Blu-ray is being pushed by the industry giants because it is harder for pirates to dup and forces medium sized distributors out of the market. Blu-ray is bad for the film industry unless you happen to be one of the giant media conglomerates that want to destroy net neutrality and independant film distribution.

If you're rich, you might want to Blu-Ray as well. But I'm not rich. Not even close. I'm not even comfortably-poor. I'm seriously about broke when my paycheck is through with bills.
But I'm honestly thinking about going Blu-Ray for 2 main reasons. One is Disney. I'm a HUGE fan of their animated classics (and only 2 of those are on Blu-Ray as of this moment - Pinocchio and Sleeping Beauty), and the rumors of a Paramount Friday the 13th boxset. Other than that, what I really want is Argento's 6 best films (Deep Red, Suspiria, Inferno, Tenebre, Phenomena, Opera) together in a Blu-Ray boxset with perfect sound and picture quality. When that comes out, I'll go Blu for sure.
But I think I agree with Babette right now. I really don't want to see Troma, Image, Elite, Anchor Bay, and their sub / sister divisions crushed by Blu-Ray.

I broke down and went Blu-ray. Only have three movies: Race to Witch Mountain, Casino Royale, and Quantum of Solace. I have the whole 52" Sony Bravia 1080p setup with surround and so forth. Worth it? Well, DVD is still way-less expensive and has outstanding picture quality. Also, you can take your DVD's anywhere (friends house, work, etc.) and watch them. Can't do that with Blu-ray. (I'm still practically the only one I know who has Blu-ray!) And DVD's COST LESS!!! (Just thought I'd add that in again, since it's a good 'en.) Blu-ray prices for movies are way too high, and I will not play musical stores just to save two or three dollars for a disc. The price needs to go down. Now. Otherwise, I'll just keep buying regular, good-old DVD's.

if you a BIG collector you'll want one. Blu-ray is bad for the film industry. Blu-Ray will be bad for the film industry. Because people are gonna say "Why should we go to the theater when we can see it on Blu-Ray in a couple of months".

I was going to be pissed that a Blu-Ray player would not play Dvds.

The reason I join the Blu-Ray revaluation is better picture quality and better sound too.

I love old vhs tapes and dvds, have not fallen in love with bluray yet. The picture and sound is great but some movies depends on bad quality to be as good as they can be.
